Abandoned Cart: Biggest lie you probably believe to be true

Have you ever asked yourself these questions:

“Is it better if I shorten my website’s checkout process by one step?”

“Is it better if I change the CTA button’s color?”

“Is it better if I display the shipping cost estimation before checkout page?”

Sounds like you have heard of these somewhere, right? If it is so, you are facing the problem of shopping cart abandonment.

Don’t worry, it’s not only you alone, there is a huge list of websites which faces cart abandonedment. Almost everyone to be exact. According to Baymard Institute, around 67.89 % of online shopping carts get abandoned across the internet.

This brings me to the biggest lie about abandoned cart you have been believing to be true till now.

Many marketers, CRO experts, and Analytics toolmakers have been telling:

“If your shopping cart abandonment rate is 67.89%, you are losing your 67.89 % of your sales”

That’s not true; It’s the biggest lie

This statement is completely wrong because it is based on a false assumption that every visitor who adds a product to the cart has a definite intention to buy only.

But, as we proceed, we will discover in this article that hardly 30-40 % of these visitors actually have an intention to buy when they are adding a product to the online virtual shopping cart. However, even then, it does not mean a definitive commitment to purchase.

Here in this content, I will explain why there is a need to change our approach to abandoned cart, and how we can market to casual cart abandoners who possess a loose commitment to buy.

Why shoppers abandon?

Most of the time we think that all the cart abandonments result from the flaws in the checkout process, but this is just the one-half of the whole picture. Just look at this infographic by Savvy Panda:

Part of the infographic by Savvy Panda showing the top six reasons for abandoned cart.

The top two reasons have nothing to do with the cart itself. Rather, they are more inclined towards the shopper’s interest in the product, and here it feels that shoppers just have a passing interest in the product.

Such shoppers are called Casual Abandoners. Another data I found on Shopify also advocates the same.

Looking at the data from these sources, we can see that casual abandoners constitute around 30-40 % of the total abandoners. This is a big population and a matter of concern. So, why are so many users treating a shopping cart as just a mere expression of interest in a product? Is an “Add to cart” action a sign of definitive intent to buy?

To find out this, we need to understand the motivations of online shoppers. Research says that there are mainly two fundamental motivations- Hedonic and utilitarian.

The Hedonic motivation

The shoppers with Hedonic motivations gain the satisfaction with the enjoyment of the shopping experience itself. Experience is what they seek and they don’t need to complete a purchase to gain the satisfaction.

The Utilitarian motivation

Utilitarian motivation is driven by the basic and fundamental needs of the life like groceries, clothes, household items etc.

The Comparative shoppers

Comparative shoppers basically add products to the cart for two reasons.

  • To conduct a price comparison
  • To bookmark or save products for later consideration

So, the reason behind this explanation of different shopping motivations and types of shoppers is to show “abandoned cart is not a mere result of breakdown in the checkout process or flaws in the shopping cart” There are multiple psychological motivations which add up to the abandonment without any involvement of the cart itself.

So, we have been treating cart abandoners all wrong?

The data presented till now and the explanation of the motivations involved in online shopping clearly explains that we have been treating the cart abandoners all wrong. And it proves our conception “adding a product to the cart is a sure sign of showing commitment in purchasing the product” is wrong.

But despite these findings, most of us treat abandoned carts as lost sales; instead of looking them as a strong lead for sales generation. Just look at this data from See Why which says 81 % of store owners believe that abandoners are just a waste of time and there is nothing good in following them. But in reality.

“75 % of abandoners have some degree of intent to purchase and will return to the site to abandon again or purchase”

Image Soucre: Hybris.com

As a result, 80 % of the store owners do not send triggered emails after abandoned cart.

Maybe, the owners think that sending emails will have no effect on the buyers’ intention or it might just end up in the spam folder.

It could be, but this is not exactly what shoppers think. According to a study, 47 % of abandoners expect to receive some type of email or reminder after they abandon a shopping cart, and this is a huge pool of data for your sales person to follow up. So, not all the abandoners are waste of time, there is a significant percentage who can be converted with proper follow-up.

Just look at these figures from Why We Don’t Buy, which explains that almost 30-40 % of these shoppers would like to complete a purchase after receiving a follow-up from the store.

In other words, we should stop treating abandoned cart as a lost sale, and start using them as the strong leads for sales generation.

A follow-up tool can help

You need to stay updated with the abandoned cart and keep a track on your site. For this, you can use Abandoned cart recovery tools that capture the abandoned cart with all the information such as – user’s email address, cart details like products in the cart, date and time of abandonment etc. Later you can use these details to follow up the customers by sending them reminder emails at regular interval of time.

There are tools where you can set the Cron jobs to automatically capture the carts, and send triggered emails and so on. Magento Abandoned cart extension is one such example. With this extension, you can send automatically triggered emails to abandoned customers with or even without offers.

So, it’s time you start using such tools to capture the strong leads that have more chances of getting converted with a little wiser approach. Just remember that all abandoned carts are not triggered through a breakdown on your cart or checkout. However, you should not ignore the need of checkout and UX optimization because there is still a major population of shoppers which is driven by the user experience on the site.

Are you using a Magento Exit Popup?

Customers visit eCommerce websites looking for products. They might just buy something or choose look around, and finally exit from the site. This is the typical work-flow of a whole eCommerce website from customers point of view. Whatever happens in the meantime when a customer is still on the website, drives the modern eCommerce and generation of revenue from the eCommerce business.

The same phenomenon is followed on a website based on Magento platform too. So, if you have a Magento site, you are no different and you have to do whatever you can in that meantime itself. Exit from a website is something that is inevitable and will surely happen at some point in time. The twist comes through what you do to make even the exits from your website engaging. A Magento Exit popup is one tool for you that can even make the exits conversion friendly and fruitful for the business.

A Magento exit popup extension is a exit overlay that triggers a popup on the browser screen by using the exit-intent technology. An exit-intent technology is used to track the visitor activities on the site in the exit popup. Whenever, an exit or an abandonment is detected, it triggers a exit popup designed to show something that might interest the visitors for not abandoning and grab something. The interests are generally created by offering an enticing deal to achieve a conversion goal by the website owner.

Why should you use a Magento Exit popup?

Customer recovery through Email list Generation

One of the most common uses of a Magento exit popup is to generate an email list data from the website. These email lists are then stored in the database and shown to the website owner which is used to get to the customers with something that can lure them back on the site.

Email list Generation using an Exit-intent technology

A simple exitpop up with something useful for the customers can convert a good amount of customers that would have anyways left the site without doing anything fruitful for your business. To achieve this kind of implementation of exit popup on your Magento site, you do not need any mass preparation; just install an effective Magento exit popup extension and it’ll do the rest for you. For example, Knowband- Magento exit popup extension has the option to design an effective exit popup for email list generation like the above image. Additionally, this exit popup can even generate coupons for the customers to make it even more engaging for the users.

A view from Knowband-Magento exit popup with discount coupon generation

Abandoned cart recovery

Now, that you have a list of email addresses of your customers, you can easily find out who has abandoned your carts and can contact them using their email addresses. The incentives in your exit popup can be of real use to lure them back. However, you can use this Magento exit popup in the aid to your campaign for abandoned cart serial reminders to the customers. Offers and discounts, free downloads and much more can be used to lure them back when you have their email ids. The above case of exit popup with an offer is a good example of abandoned cart recovery by sending serial reminders.

Direction of the users back to some other content

Not, all the exits from your website consist of an abandoned cart. It might be possible that customers exit the website as they did not find what they were looking for. There are several more reasons for an exit. So, when a customer does not find an item of interest, he/she might not be interested in any coupon at all. You can divert such traffic back on your website to something that might interest the customer other than your coupon or offer. For example, You can use a Magento exit popup to divert the customers to a page of best-selling and trending items on your website. An eCommerce site can use this technique to show alternate offers or products to the visitors not interested in buying the current items.

Finally, an exit popup on your Magento site can prove to be of great use if utilized wisely. You should look for a Magento exit popup extension that provides you enough access to customize a exit popup according to your needs and is flexible to different configurations as discussed above. It should be well enough to capture email ids, re-direct traffic, or generate coupon codes to encourage conversions for your eCommerce business.

Why do you need a One page Magento Checkout Extension?

With every eCommerce business comes certain perks and challenges. For a Magento based eCommerce store luckily perks are the rulers. However, there are few challenges with the Magento stores where a third party intervention is necessarily required. I am talking about the challenges your customers face in the checkout process.

The default Magento checkout presents an effective interface for checking out on the Magento stores. However, the latest advancement of competition in the eCommerce market does not support the idea of sticking to the default checkout for driving desired macro conversions. There are multiple grounds to which it feels like default Magento checkout needs an upgrade.

In this article, I am going to discuss how sticking to the default Magento checkout extension might not be a competitive option for you, and why do you need to replace it with a customized One page Magento checkout extension.

Uncountable reasons can be found for replacing the default checkout with One page Magento checkout extension like the above.

The checkout length

Whenever I go to supermarket for shopping, I pray that checkout line should not be crowded. If I find a checkout line very lengthy, I automatically run my eyes to see if any other checkout line would be smaller than this line. That’s human tendency to always look for a better alternative.

Now, let’s consider an eCommerce site, instead of a physical supermarket. Here, the case might not be exactly the same. If a customer finds your checkout process lengthy, he/she will not run his/her eyes immediately to see a smaller checkout process, but it will surely affect the decision making for the next time when he/she decides to shop online. Your store might not be the first choice, just because of the lengthy checkout forms customer filled the last time when he/she was on-board.

While replacing your generic Magento checkout with a one-page checkout structure, it will immediately reduce the number of pages from your checkout process. Moreover, it will also make sure that some not-so-useful fields are disabled from the checkout form to make the process, even further short.

Cart update

The default Magento checkout uses a page refresh to update the information changes in a shopping cart. It uses a separate page where you can update some minor cart details. However, each time you update the cart you will have to go though a necessary page refresh otherwise the information will not be updated.

If you have a one-page checkout Magento extension you may overcome this hurdle very easily. For example the Knowband-One page Magento checkout extension uses an Ajax based update for modifying a shopping cart at the checkout page. It means, if you want to remove a product from the cart, or update the product quantity, you do not need to refresh the whole page. The cart will be automatically refreshed using Ajax requests and without refreshing the whole page.

Sign-up, Login and Social login

Social login has become an integral part of eCommerce websites nowadays. Customers really hate when you ask them to perform a necessary sign-up at the checkout page. The default One page Magento checkout extension does not provide any social login option though. However, guest checkout option is already there  that customers can use as an alliterative to account creation.

Problem is, you might not want to allow a guest checkout every time. I mean, a guest checkout is useful to convert a random customer for one, but it will not provide you enough opportunities to make some repeated customers by giving them a personalized user experience. For that reason, a sign-up is very important for your conversion rate optimization (CRO) front. So, you need something that will make the sign-up process so easy that no customer will hate the sign-ups.

It is when social login comes into the picture. A one-page checkout extension with social login option at checkout process is a bonus to your CRO campaigns. It works in multiple ways to deliver a hassle free checkout without a need to fill the lengthy account registration-forms.

Finally

A one-page checkout is the need of hour. The most important reason for adopting the One page Magento checkout extension for you is because your rival sites have already adopted it. You cannot afford to loose against your competitors for something that you can acquire very easily by just installing the a proper One-page Magento checkout extension.

How to use Magento Abandoned Cart Extension to recover lost sales?

Magento has been the best tool for eCommerce startups for a very long time. It is not just a better eCommerce platform but also a better platform for the B2B business model. From handling heavy transactions from a large number of customers to Managing the complex pricing system as a B2B website, Magento has proven it’s efficiency on multiple grounds.

Despite all these advanced functionalities and great a abilities, even Magento is not safe from the evil of shopping cart abandonment. Hail the Magento’s affinity to acquire even more advanced functionalities by incorporating third party Magento extensions. Magento Abandoned cart extension is one such extension to the core functionalities of Magento.

How Magento Abandoned cart extension works?

The core logic behind a Magento Abandoned cart extension is to track and capture the information of customers checking out on a Magento site. The information basically includes Name of the customers, E-mail id, and the Cart content. Now, that the Magento Abandoned cart extension captures all these information from a Magento checkout, it uses this information to establish a communication between the Website Owner/Admin and the customer in case the when a customer decides to abandoned the cart.

How Magento Abandoned cart extension uses the customer information?

The active role of a Magento Abandoned cart extension comes into the lime-light when a customer leaves the site after adding some products and without making a payment. It means that the customer has finally abandoned a cart from your site. In the meantime, during certain instances of the checkout process, the Magento Abandoned cart extension captures the information about that customer. The information is then utilized in multiple areas to present an abandoned cart recovery medium to the website owner.

  • To mark a cart as abandoned–

Magento Abandoned cart extension basically captures the information about every customer and his cart on the site. However, not all the carts can be considered as abandoned. Therefore a Magento Abandoned cart extension provides the option to configure a time limit after which if the customers do not return to the cart, then the cart will be considered an abandoned.

  • After a cart is marked Abandoned–

After a cart is marked as an abandoned cart, the Magento Abandoned cart extension process it’s working for the recovery of the lost sale. The marked abandoned carts are first listed on a separate interface from where the website owner can easily see the details of the cart. There are two types of carts that are captured in this list. One is the carts without email id and other is the carts with email ids.

The carts without email ids cannot be used for the recovery here, as the only communication medium (email reminder) that the Magento Abandoned cart extension uses is not available in this case.

  • Carts with email ids–

The carts where customers have provided their email id during the incomplete checkout process are used by the Magento Abandoned cart extension to send serial reminders directly from the extension’s interface. For doing so, the extension stores a large number of email templates that can be used here. There are basically two types of email templates that are used by the Magento Abandoned cart extension. Email templates that offer a promotion, discount, or any other offer in the lieu of completing the checkout process. Other types of email templates are general reminders that are not accompanied by an offer or discount. They are just the reminders for the customer to inform that he has left a cart abandoned on your site and he can still complete his checkout process.

  • If customer decides to complete the checkout- Now, it depends on the efficacy of your serial reminders and quality of your reminder emails to encourage the customer to complete his checkout. So, let’s say you have written some nice emails that encouraged the customer to come back and complete his purchase. In this case, the emails that you have sent, all of them consist of a direct checkout link. Clicking on this link will directly take the customer to your checkout page with all the products and customer information already restored. The customer has to just make a payment and complete the checkout to earn you a recovered sale that was lost because of shopping cart abandonment.

Concluding,

This is how a well developed Magento Abandoned cart extension works to recover the lost sales for you. There are some advanced Magento Abandoned cart extensions that go ahead and deliver some more useful functionalities. For example, with Knowband’s Magento Abandoned cart extension:

  • A Cron can be set to automatically capture and list the abandoned carts according to the time limit set.
  • A Cron can be set to automatically send the reminder emails to the customers after they are captured.
  • Admin can decide the time period after which the emails will be sent to the customer.
  • Admin can set the time frame for a particular cart during which a particular email template will be used to send the reminder. The template could be with an offer or without offer; depends on the template set.

How to add a custom Magento checkout extension in place of default checkout?

Checking out has been a pain to the customers for a very long time. I can recall the days when multi-page checkouts were the only option available to both the website owners and the customers on the website. Magento, one of the most popular eCommerce platform; it has a default Magento checkout extension that comes pre-configured with the first installation. However, still, this generic Magento checkout is not enough to reduce that pain for the website owners.

I would not go in detail because, as a website owner you must have the knowledge of how the generic checkout is not a perfect tool to fight the evils like shopping cart abandonment and frequent checkout-bounce-backs. So, here I am going to explain how can you upgrade your existing Magento checkout extension into a fully efficient Magento one page checkout.

Why upgrade your Magento checkout extension?

In simple words, your generic Magento checkout extension looks something like this:

It’s a multi-step Magento checkout that continues with the next step only when you complete the process serially. So, it consists of a six-step checkout without an option of social login. This reason is enough to counter the usability of the first steps itself. Moreover, when all your rival sites already provide a better checkout experience, the bounce backs from your checkout page would be a frequently observed phenomenon.

Now look at the example of a custom Magento one page checkout extension in the screenshot below from the Knowband’s Magento one page checkout extension:

A custom Magento one page checkout looks something like the above. A one-page checkout process with the option to login via social account, update the cart and products, select the shipping option and make the payment on the same page. Now, the big question, which one would your customers like better? Which one do you find more user-friendly? I think the answer is simple. So, if you are still using the generic Magento checkout extension and wish to touch the skies with your online business, sticking to the same would not be an advice that I will give here.

So, let’s upgrade your current Magento checkout extension into a usable Magento one page checkout.

How to upgrade your Magento checkout extension?

Like every other eCommerce platform, Magento is a master of great affinity to integrate custom Magento extensions. So, it provides the third party Magento developers from the community a great option to develop custom Magento extensions and install them. Magento one page checkout extension is one such Magento extension which was first introduced to fight with the shopping cart abandonments on a Magento based eCommerce site. Later, the one-page checkout model became so popular that a large number of Magento developers came up with their own versions of the same. Each of them presents the Magento checkout in their own way, but the goal is same; providing a single page checkout experience.

So, Solution is simple, just look out for a proper Magento one page checkout extension and install it on your Magento platform. It seems to be a simple task, but it is not really so. As I have mentioned earlier, a large number of Magento developers have come up with their versions of the same; trust me, all of them are really not useful. So, you have to be very picky when it comes to spending some money in buying a correct Magento one page checkout extension. You have to understand the best practices of a true one-page checkout model and choose accordingly.

Things to consider before starting a Magento Marketplace

A Marketplace site is all that every eCommerce business owner is wishing to have by his side. Marketplace model of eCommerce has a name for providing loads of opportunities and choices to everyone who is involved in it. From Website Owner, Marketplace Seller to Marketplace customers, everyone gets something enlarged as compared to an inventory model of eCommerce.

Having a marketplace website is not a big task, having a successful marketplace is. You cannot just develop a marketplace site without considering some situations that need to be fulfilled. Here, I am enlisting some questions and factors that you should consider before starting a Magento Marketplace. In fact, you must consider this situation in almost all the eCommerce platforms.

Magento was originally developed as an inventory based eCommerce site

A marketplace site comes out as providing a burden-free experience in most of the cases for a marketplace owner. He/she does not need to worry about maintaining an inventory of products, shipping the products to the customers, etc. Everything seems to be so perfect. However, shifting from an inventory model to a Magento marketplace would not be an easy task.

Magento eCommerce platform has been originally designed to serve as an inventory based eCommerce site. So, it is required to extend its original functionalities by developing a Magento Marketplace extension that delivers the functionalities required by a marketplace site. So, when you are thinking of getting a Magento Marketplace extension, you should essentially look into these factors. You should look if your Magento Marketplace extension is able to handle the below core functionalities of a marketplace:

A basic Magento marketplace organization will look like this.

Magento Marketplace – Seller registration

Sellers are the most important part of any marketplace site. Without sellers, it is just a regular eCommerce site. So, in your Magento marketplace extension, you should essentially look if it can manage the seller registrations. Look for the following features for managing seller registrations:

  • Sellers should be able to register a separate seller account.
  • There should be an option for Marketplace admin to approve/disapprove a seller account request.
  • Only approved sellers should be allowed to sell on the marketplace.
  • Sellers should be able to upload products only in allowed categories
  • Approved sellers should be able to access a seller panel from where they can:
    • Update their shop profile and seller details
    • Input their shop policies
    • Upload the products is allowed categories
    • If they wish to sell products from new categories, they should be able to request a new category access from the admin
    • Receive orders from customers
    • Manage orders and update the order statuses
    • Track the report of sales made
    • Track the amount of commission paid to admin
    • Communicate with the marketplace admin

Marketplace Admin–Seller management

The marketplace admin is the owner of the website or is a representative of the owner. Admin should have all the ethical accesses that will make sure that everything is going smoothly on his website. A Magento marketplace admin should have the following accesses to manage his website properly:

  • Admin should be able to approve/disapprove a seller account request.
  • Admin should be able to view the details of the sellers.
  • Admin should be able to activate/deactivate a seller anytime he wishes to.
  • Admin should be able to add a shipping option for the sellers to use.
  • Admin should be able to approve/disapprove a new category request.
  • Admin should be able to approve/disapprove a product uploaded by a seller.
  • Admin should be able to track the sales made by a seller.
  • Admin should be able to track the commissions earned on different sales made.

A Magento Marketplace from the customers point of view

Customers are the inseparable part of any business activity. Without having a proper scope for customer management, no eCommerce site can even survive for a day. Even a marketplace site needs a proper system to manage the customers. Lucking Magento being a very efficient platform provides inbuilt functionalities to manage the customers. So, you don’t have to worry much about customer management in your Magento Marketplace. However, you should tally that if:

  • Customers can browse all the approved products from all the sellers.
  • Customers can see the basic Seller information like Seller or shop name.
  • Customer can place orders for the products from any seller on the site
  • Sellers can receive the order placed for their product.
  • Sellers can check if payment for the order had been made.
  • Sellers can update an order’s status.

Finally,

These are the basic Marketplace functionalities that you should look in a marketplace extension. Even in your search for a Magento Marketplace extension, these features are equally important to look for.

You can check out this Magento Multi-Vendor Marketplace extension to know how a proper Magento Marketplace extension works for you.

Other enterprise-level B2B solutions like IBM and Oracle come out as far more expensive than Magento for B2B solutions. Moreover, due to a massive base of Magento developers, freelancers, and Magento development companies Magento provides a good bargain power to the Magento services seekers.

Large number of already developed Magento B2B solutions

Now, it’s known that Magento is a master of a huge community of users, developers, freelancers and business owners, third party Magento developers are always ready with pre-developed solutions to make the customization quick, and less expensive. For example, Magento multi-vendor marketplace extension is a third party Magento extension that converts a Magento store into a marketplace site. This is a perfect example to explain that most of the advanced B2B features can be achieved in Magento without going for customization services. You can always find most of the Magento extensions and install them to extend the functionalities in minutes.

Complex pricing system of B2B market

The B2B market also consists of the wholesalers and manufacturing companies who require a more complex and advanced pricing system. The pricing system includes individual and group discounts, location and tire-oriented rates, prices based on sales volume etc. This massive flexibility in pricing system cannot be handled by a simple eCommerce platform. Therefore Magento for B2b fits the best here as it provides a wide flexibility to decide the pricing based on all these factors. It is a perfect platform to handle the business from Wholesale and Manufacturer market.
